Mission Statement
The Sydney Neuro Oncology Group is a multidisciplinary team of doctors and health professionals spanning Pathology, Neurology, Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery, Oncology, Palliative Care and Radiotherapy who are interested in the overall management of brain tumours. Tumour treatment has evolved considerably from a narrow field to span multiple disciplines as noted above. In many respects the best treatment of a brain tumour is a joint decision between the physician, surgeon and neuro-oncologist.
The organisation aims to enhance the management of brain tumours by providing a coordinated group rather than a solitary doctor making all the critical decisions.
There are multiple avenues of treatment of malignant brain tumours spanning various technical aspects of radiotherapy including radiosurgery and multiple chemotherapeutic options. This organisation will coordinate the research into various radiation and drug protocols used in advanced treatment of malignant tumours.
The group is involved in research projects that span epidemiology, diagnostic imaging, surgical approaches, tumour biology and drug trials.
The unit itself is not institution specific and although based in the Northern Sydney Area Health Services it is by no means specific to that area. The organisation is a non-profit organisation, any profit through donations will be ploughed back into research.
